How to prepare the ground for artificial grass
Step 1
Preparation is key to get the best results, carefully measure your area to prevent wastage when ordering your grass. If you are installing edging then this needs to be taken in to consideration. Edging should not be higher than the level of the turf
Step 2
Remove the previous turf if needs be and dig to a depth of 100mm. If your soil is already compacted and free draining then you can get away with 70mm depth instead.
Step 3
Astroturf needs a durable edge to fit against this needs to be level there’s many materials that will be suitable these include; brick, concrete, metal or timber will be suitable.
Step 4
Once edging is done start adding a 75mm aggregate such as MOT type 1 this will be needed if you have clay soil which drains poorly. You will need a compactor to make this nice and firm.
Step 5
Add 20mm-40mm sharp sand, rake until even then use the compactor again to make a firm base. This process may need repeating to achieve the best results. The total sub-base layer will depend on the pile height of the fake lawn you have chosen along with the type of soil you have. You need to encourage a slight camber in the base to ensure draining runs to the edging and isn’t pooling in the middle.
Step 6
Once the sub-base layer is complete slightly damp with water so the materials mix together.
Step 7
Finally install a weed membrane ensuring in covers the whole of the base layer.
How to install Artificial Grass
Step 1
Roll out your Artificial Grass, making sure there’s a 50mm overlap on all outside edges, and between any sections. If you are making joins make sure the pile runs the same way.
Step 2
Leave the grass for a few hours or overnight to acclimatise.
Step 3
For joining sections you will need to; line them up with an overlap making sure the pile is the same direction. Fold back one of the sections and carefully cut through the latex with a sharp knife. Bring the sections together there should be a consistent 1-2mm gap between seams. The seams shouldn’t be visible from a distance.
Step 4
Carefully peel the joint back and place Joining tape along the seam. Remember shiny side facing downwards. Apply lawn adhesive on top of the joining tape and fix the lawn in place. slowly walk along the joint line to make sure the adhesive has stuck down correctly. Repeat the process for anymore joints. Fix the fake grass to the sub-base using nails or pins along the edges.
Step 5
Carefully neaten up any edges using a sharp knife. Leave the grass for 24hrs to ensure adhesive has dried and for the turf to settle.
