Composite Balustrade Spindle

Spindles are the vertical balusters that fill the space between your handrail and baserail. They’re what turns an open frame into actual guarding, and they’re the part that has to be spaced right. As a rule you’ll need nine spindles per 1.5m bay. Because that’s the spacing that keeps the gaps under the 100mm limit domestic guarding calls for. So buy them on their own when you’re extending a run, replacing a damaged one, or, instead of working from a standard kit, building a balustrade to your own measurements.

Because they’re made from the same composite as our balustrade kit and decking — real wood fibres bound with plastic resin — you get the look of timber but without the upkeep. So there’s no sanding, no staining and no annual repaint. Instead, a wash with soapy water now and then is all they need.

Why composite

• Holds its colour. It’s UV-stabilised, so the spindles won’t grey off or blotch in full sun and British weather. Of course there’s a slight, even mellowing in the first few weeks — but then it stays put.
• No rot, no warp. Because they absorb far less water than timber, they won’t twist or rot where they meet the rails. As a result, the run stays straight and true instead of bowing over time.
• Low maintenance. So there’s no annual sanding or staining. They keep their strength and finish year after year with next to no effort.

Spacing and safety

Spindle spacing isn’t something to eyeball. For domestic guarding, the gaps need to stay under 100mm so a small child can’t slip through. Any drop over 600mm needs guarding in the first place. Nine spindles across a 1.5m bay is set up to hit that.
