Description

Composite Balustrade Kit

Composite balustrade kit: safe, solid, and no yearly upkeep

A composite balustrade does two jobs. It stops people going over the edge, and it finishes a deck properly. Ours does both without the maintenance that comes with timber. No sanding. No annual re-stain. No flaking paint by year three.

The material is recycled wood fibre bonded with plastic resin, so you get the look of real wood with none of the rot, warp or splintering. It shrugs off UV and British weather, and it’s backed by a 25-year limited warranty. Choose from four colours — Black, Grey, Teak and Chocolate — all matched to our composite decking range so your rails and boards actually belong together.

One thing to know before you order: the Handrail Section and the Post Kit are sold as separate options on this page. You need 1 handrail section and 2 post sections to build a run. Example if you want to have 3 balustrade sections you will need to order 3 handrail sections and 4 posts kits. Here’s exactly what’s in each.

What’s in each Handrail Section

  • 1 × Handrail, 1.5m x 800mm x 450mm
  • 1 × Baserail, 1.5m x 900mm x 400mm
  • 9 × Spindles, 760mm x 600mm x 400mm
  • 2 × Packers
  • Handrail and baserail brackets to fix the rails to your posts

Each section spans a 1.5m bay between posts.

What’s in each Post Kit

  • 1 × Post, 1.2m × 100mm × 100mm (we also do 2.4m composite balustrade posts, though not as a kit)
  • 1 × Post insert 800mm x (plate) 50mm x 50mm
  • 1 × Base plate
  • 1 × Post cap

The parts, explained

  • Handrail — the top rail, and the part you actually grip.
  • Baserail — the lower rail, running parallel to the handrail between posts.
  • Spindles — the vertical infill between the two rails. This is the barrier that stops anyone slipping through.
  • Packers — small spacers that sit in the baserail to hold the spindles evenly and square.
  • Handrail bracket — fixes the handrail to the post.
  • Baserail bracket — fixes the baserail to the post.
  • Post — the composite sleeve that slides over the metal insert.
  • Post insert — the metal core inside the post. A welded base plate at the bottom takes up to four bolts, so the whole post anchors down solid.
  • Base plate — the trim that sits over the foot of the post to hide the fixings and tidy the base.
  • Post cap — caps the top of the post, sheds water, and finishes the look.

Why composite over timber

  • Low maintenance. Resistant to splinters, stains and fading. It holds its strength and colour year after year — no treating, no repainting.
  • Safer underfoot and to the touch. Composite is slip-resistant even when wet, absorbs far less water than timber, and gives fungi and mould little to grow on.
  • Eco-friendly. Made largely from recycled materials rather than felled timber.
  • Matched to your deck. Built to pair with our composite decking for one cohesive finish, not a rail that clashes with the boards.

Where it works

  • Decks and patios. A secure barrier that also lifts the look of the space — the difference between a deck and a finished deck.
  • Balconies. Durable and good-looking, and it suits most house styles.
  • Staircases. A robust handrail and infill for outdoor steps, where grip and strength matter most.

How many kits and posts do I need?

  • Measure the total length you’re railing off.
  • Each Handrail Section covers a 1.5m bay, so divide your run by 1.5m for the number of sections.
  • Then add posts: on a straight run that’s one at each end plus one at every join between sections. Corners and step returns need an extra post each. If you’re not sure, send us your measurements or a quick sketch and we’ll work the quantities out with you before you order.
