What are deck planters?
Decking planters are the same concept as a big plant pot but built using Composite Decking. Planters can either be free standing or built on top of your decking. Composite is a great material to use for planters as it won’t rot or warp over time due to its high durability.
How to make planters from composite decking
First you will need:
- Decking boards (these can be off cuts depending on the size you want to make)
- decking screws
- A saw
- A drill
- black heavy duty refuse bag or empty compost bag
- stones
- compost
Cut the side pieces for your planter
- Cut 4 boards at 45 degrees to be 5′ long from tip to tip. These will create the 2 side pieces for your planter.
- Next cut 4 boards at 45 degrees to be 3′ from tip to tip. These will create to two shorter pieces for your planter. The 45 degree angle will help create a nice clean corner
Attach the long side of the planter
- stand the corner pieces up on a nice flat surface.
- Place the long 5’against the first corner point of the 45 degree at the edge of the corner point.
- the two 11″ pieces will meet together.
- Fasten the 5′ piece to the corner piece with the screws. Repeat on the other end.
- Place the second 5′ ontop of the side you have attached and screw.
- Repeat the process on the other side to create two 5′ sides
Attach the short sides
- Place the 3′ piece against the corner pieces that are attached to the corner pieces.
- Attach the 3′ piece to the corner piece with screws. Repeat the process until completed.
Add supports
- Place two 11″ pieces equal distance apart and fasten them to 5′ long pieces. Screw together and repeat the process.
- These supports will stop the long pieces from bowing out.
Fill your planter
- Place your planter in the desired area. (This will be heavier once filled so easier to do beforehand).
- Line the planter with some refuse bags and line with a weed mat material. You will need to add a few holes to the base for drainage purposes.
- Add a base of stone to the bottom of the planter (inside) then fill with compost.Â
- You are ready to pot your planter with your plants or vegetables.
